Should I inspect my roof at regular intervals ?

We use the term roofline to explain the point where your roof meets your house, this can be the most vulnerable part of your home. It is important to inspect your roof on a regular basis to pick up on any possible repairs that may need completing. 

Roofline elements such as fascia’s, soffits and guttering are all vital components to your home however, they are often forgotten about or not taking care of as much as something inside the home such as home maintenance. Failing to inspect and therefore identify roofline problems is a common habit in households around England. These often lead to deeper-lying damp and structural issues. The repairs could be costly is the repairs are not handled correctly in good. 

Guttering 

Guttering has watertight seals, if you install wider gutter joints they allow it to expand and contract with the heat without snapping the gutter. 

Downpipe

The downpipe is essential to protect the foundations of your home. It does this by channelling rainwater safely to the drains. Downpipes come in a choice of round or square and different colours to blend in with any type/style of property. 

Fascia 

The UPVC fascia is designed to be maintenance free. It is also impact resistant to protect your roofs timbers’ rafter ends from the unpredictable British weather, they also come in a range of styles and colours available to suit your home. 

Soffit

Gutter Guard

If you haven’t had these fitted within your roof, we recommend you purchase them and install them. They prevent moss, leaves and debris from blocking up the gutters to save the dreadful chore of climbing the ladder every year to clean it all out. 

By checking your roof for damage often you are able to see the first signs of damage, and let’s be honest, this is not done often enough by anyone!

The problem with the roofline is that we don’t look at it very often, so we do not see the issues until the damage has most likely been done. However, it is important we recognise signs of damage at the earliest opportunity to avoid the damage being too drastic!

What do I look for when checking my roof?

Peeling paint!

If paint is peeling on either the fascia or soffits it may indicate that the boards may be  rotten and beginning to let water in. Many properties have timber fascia, soffits which most likely need constantly repainting to keep them in good condition and appealing to the eye, it obviously becomes more difficult due to the roof level and the need for constant paining. If you purchase UPVC fascia, soffits, and guttering they never need repainting and are available in numerous finishes and colours to match you property. To keep them looking good, simply wipe down with a damp cloth and some washing up liquid. 

A tip would be that if you can see the gutter brackets have become loose, or fallen off it often means the fascia boards are in poor condition. 

Leaves and debris blocking dripping gutters

Gutters that are dripping, even when the weather is dry, could mean leaves and debris are blocking them up. This means that the gutter cannot divert water away from your homes. When the weather turns inclement, water might spill from certain points, much like a waterfall. This will damage a home’s foundation if not addressed. If there are damp patches on the inside and outside of the property please seek professional advice.

Water getting into the fascia’s

This happens when the soffit and fascia boards are damaged, and allowing water to enter the roof rafters. Loose or blocked guttering causes water to pour down the walls. If you are experiencing any of the above signs, you need to take action sooner rather than later! It may be that the roofline needs more than a clean.
